Kiflings (Melt Aways)
History: This recipe is from the St. Joseph Cookbook that was used as a fundraiser for the local Catholic Church. The original recipe calls for you to make little balls, however my mother made them by hand into little crescent moons. They were so perfect that they looked like she had cut them with a cookie cutter.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb butter
- 1 cup powder sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla (can use minced vanilla bean)
- 4 cups of flour
- 1 cup finely chopped walnut or nut of your choice (in Texas we have a lot of Pecans so I love them with Pecans)
- Powder sugar for coating
Directions:
- Cream butter and powder sugar together.
- Add flour and vanilla, and blend well.
- Add the finely chopped nuts.
- Chill for several hours or overnight.
- Make sure to cover because it will dry in the refrigerator.
- Roll a teaspoon of dough lightly between palms of hands into a ball.
- Form a crescent with your fingers and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 350 degrees 20 minutes.
- While hot roll in extra powder sugar.
Yield 4 dozen.
Buon Appetito
