Sandy's World Famous Sweet & Sour Loaf

Vegetarian Sweet N Sour Loaf mmmmmm . . . . . . on the right. On the left below is vegetarian burger product that can be found in health food stores. It is my favorite to make this loaf.

Vegetarian Sweet N Sour Loaf

History: This is one of the most requested recipes by vegetarians and meat eaters too. It came from a really good friend at church. I make it often and have found ways to make it vegan as well as lower in fat.
Ingredients:
  • 1 chopped onion (I have used bell pepper chopped to make 1 cup if I didn't have a whole onion.)
  • 6 slices fresh whole wheat bread cubed ( I freeze all the ends of my bread because nobody likes them and use them when I make this dish)
  • 1 stick margarine (I use butter)
  • 1 can vegeburger or 20 ounces of some vegetarian burger like product.
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) grated Cheddar cheese ( can use soy cheese )
  • 4 eggs beaten (can use egg substitute)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder ( I use a couple teaspoons real garlic)
  • 1 teaspoon sage ( I usually have fresh sage and use 1 tablespoon. . . . sage is the key in this recipe)
Glaze:
1/2 cup catsup
1/2 brown sugar
1/2 water

Directions:

  1. In the microwave or a large skillet, melt margarine and saute chopped onion.
  2. Add bread cubes and coat them with the margarine and onion mix.
  3. Place in large bowl so you can add vegeburger, cheese eggs, and spices.
  4. Press into an oil 9x9x2 inch square baking dish.
  5. Mix glaze ingredients in a cup and pour over loaf.
  6. Bake in a 350 oven for 45 minutes.
  7. Serves 8-10 and freezes well.
